This week members of The Newspaper Guild, CWA Local 31003, were joined by supporters at City Hall denouncing the illegal firing of 12 workers by El Diario/ImpreMedia.  The workers were fired in June when the company began to implement their union-busting campaign.

This week the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, with the help of Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and the Taxi & Limousine Commission, won restitution from taxi fleet owner SLS Jet for overcharging drivers on their cab leases.  SLS jet was found to have exceeded TLC lease cap rules and was ordered to pay over $1.6 million in restitution and fines.

The Workers United Education Program (affiliated with the Consortium for Worker Education) will begin its FREE adult English language (ESL) program in mid-August.  Attached are flyers in English, Spanish and Chinese.  We will have registration on August 9th, 13th and 14th, but we have an open enrollment policy, so students can register after those dates with an appointment.

In the late 1950's and early 1960's New York City experienced a residential apartment, new construction boom, intended to stem the exodus of middle class families leaving the Big Apple for new single family, suburban housing developments. Hundreds of brick buildings, ranging from 5 to 25 stories were constructed across the five boroughs, offering families improved affordable housing opportunities.
