In Memoriam: Past NYC CLC President Thomas Van Arsdale, February 16th, 1924—May 20, 2018

The New York City labor movement joins in mourning the passing of Thomas Van Arsdale on May 20th. Thomas, the son of legendary labor leader Harry Van Arsdale, Jr., was an active trade unionist throughout his life as a member of Local 3 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He served as Local 3's Business Manager, as Treasurer of the IBEW, and as President of the New York City Central Labor Council from 1986 until 1995.

"As the leader of the New York City Central Labor Council, Tom carried himself with enormous grace and integrity,” said NYC CLC President Vincent Alvarez. “He dedicated his entire life to improving conditions for the working people of New York City. Tom recognized how critical it was and is for people to be actively involved in their unions, their communities, and in the political process, and understood that member education was key to achieving meaningful progress for middle class families.”

Thomas's service to his fellow man resulted in millions of men and women having better security in their working lives, with greater wages, benefits, and insurance that would not have existed but for his efforts. His family was gracious in sharing his time on behalf of so many known and unknown who reaped the benefit of his labor.
