New York, NY – New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO President Vincent Alvarez today released the following statement, congratulating staff at Gawker, who voted yesterday to join the Writers Guild of America East, AFL-CIO:

“Congratulations to the hardworking men and women at Gawker, who yesterday voted to become members of the Writers Guild of America East, AFL-CIO.  This vote, which was approved by 75% of staff, symbolizes a real desire on the part of workers to stand together to fight for the wages and benefits they deserve. 

“The workers’ decision to join a union is an important step forward for digital media writers.  I commend these new union members for working toward building more sustainable careers and a voice at work for themselves and their colleagues.”
