A. Philip Randolph Institute

Founded in 1965, the A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI) named after its founder, began as national organization of black trade unionists. APRI is the senior constituency group of the AFL-CIO. Asa Philip Randolph was the greatest black labor leader in American history and the father of the modern American civil rights movement. Randolph recognized that blacks and labor share a common interest for social and economic justice; and as a result he forged an alliance with the labor movement.

APRI’s mission, from the beginning has been to fight for racial equality, social and economic justice. The Institute works to build and strengthen bridges between labor and communities of color. With more than 150 chapters in more than 40 states, APRI members are involved in non partisan voter registration, voter education and voter mobilization efforts as well as community education projects. Working with communities of color, the institute seeks to serve as a clearinghouse for information and provides training and education vital for the community.

APRI seeks structural changes through the American democratic process.
