CJNY, Cornell ILR and Union Members Talk Climate at COAL + ICE
On Wednesday, June 12th labor leaders, union members, and elected officials joined together to view the "COAL + ICE" exhibit at the Asia Society and Museum. The event, hosted by Cornell ILR's Climate Jobs Institute, represents the causes and consequences of climate change while highlighting current avenues to improve our impact on the environment. To that end, union members and leaders from Climate Jobs New York spoke about their experiences on the job both with the effects of climate change and innovative approaches to combat it. Nella Pineda-Marcon of NYSNA, Mark Lundquist of Local 3 IBEW, and Maggie Joyce of UFT related their stories to the larger work of taking steps to transition to a green energy economy while producing good, union jobs. In addition, CLC President Vinny Alvarez and Cornell ILR's Climate Jobs Institute Executive Director Lara Skinner also spoke about how the labor movement has jumped to be on the frontlines of the fight against climate change.
