Mediation Meeting Between Staten Island Ferry Union and City Set for Next Week
Mediation between the Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association (MEBA)—which represents the captains, assistant captains, mates, engineers and chief engineers on the Staten Island Ferry— and the City, ongoing since last year, continues, with another meeting will take place next week. Roland Rexha, the secretary and treasurer of MEBA, told the Staten Island Advance that the union is hopeful about its upcoming meeting with Campion, the Office of Labor Relations (OLR), and mediator Alan Viani.
“MEBA agreed to mediation months ago and are happy to have Al Viani in our negotiations on behalf of the hardworking and honorable Staten Island Ferry crew,” he said. “However, until OLR and Commissioner Campion come to table with a serious offer that addresses the crewing shortage and compensates for the experience and licensing of our mariners, we are treading water. We are hopeful that the city bargains in good faith in our upcoming talks to settle a long overdue contract.” Read more here.
