Mount Sinai Physicians at Elmhurst Hospital Set to Strike Monday 5/22; Physicians at Jamaica, Flushing Make Tentative Deal

Across New York City, resident physicians, alongside their nursing coworkers, are at the center of patient care in our hospitals. Elmhurst physicians are ready to strike if Mount Sinai does not agree to award them parity in salary and benefits with Mount Sinai Hospital resident physicians. Currently, there is a two-tiered system of treatment of resident physicians in New York City: By and large, physicians at hospitals in wealthier, whiter neighborhoods are paid more and have better resources than those working in working-class communities of color. The residents have planned a 5-day ULP strike to begin on May 22 if they cannot reach an agreement with Mount Sinai.

Earlier this week, a planned strike at Jamaica and Flushing Hospitals was averted as CIR resident doctors reached a tentative contract agreement. Saying the system finally bargained in good faith, the physicians won virtually unheard-of patient care proposals that focused on issues such as adequate resources to limit patient loads and enforceable processes to address out-of-title work. The deal includes 18% salary increases over three years — the wage pattern recently set by NYSNA nurses who went on strike earlier this year — along with wins on the physicians’ core demands on patient loads and out-of-title work.
