Fordham Graduate Student Workers Win Landslide Election
On Thursday, graduate student workers at Fordham University won their election to become members of CWA Local 1104 by a overwhelming vote of 229 to 15. The workers announced their intention to form a union in February, expressing their desire to bargain for a fair contract that will create a formal grievance structure, raise workers’ pay, secure affordable healthcare, ensure paid leave and reasonable accommodations for parents and caretakers, cut burdensome student fees and establish protections for international students. In a letter to University President Fr. Joseph McShane, they also expressed that by unionizing, they were upholding the University’s commitment to cura personalis and the Catholic Church’s historical commitment to social justice, especially the Church’s unequivocal support for the right of workers to unionize.
