TWU RALLY, NYSNA/1199 ‘FUNERAL MARCH’ INCLUDED IN DAY OF ACTION FOR WORKERS
On Wednesday, TWU, NYSNA and 1199 joined with community groups like ROC-NY, New York Communities for Change and UnitedNY for a day of action for workers. The day’s events began with a morning TWU rally, where members and supporters gathered at MTA headquarters to speak about the need for service and job restorations.
During the afternoon, members of ROC-NY organized a “sit-in” at a Midtown Capital Grille, in protest of parent company Darden Brand’s insistence on paying a sub-minimum wage to its tipped employees.
The evening’s events began with a NYCHA hearing protest, where hundreds of public housing tenants gathered to air their grievances with the Board’s failure to dedicate adequate funding for building repairs. Tenants also protested NYCHA’s plan to lease land at eight public developments, to be used for luxury apartments. The evening continued with a NYSNA/1199 “funeral march” for Brooklyn healthcare. Attendees marched over the Brooklyn Bridge to City Hall, and 12 protestors, including union officials, members and elected officials, were arrested.
The day of action ended with a Prospect Park rally, where Fast Food Forward members voted to authorize a walk-out and strike in protest of low wages and unfair treatment.
