Striking HarperCollins Workers to Rally Outside Parent Company
Wed, Jan 18, 2023 at 12:30 PM
Unionized employees at HarperCollins Publishers are hosting a rally outside parent company, News Corp, offices at 1211 Avenue of Americas in Manhattan, on January 18 at 12:30 PM. The rally follows the two-month mark of the strike, which commenced on November 10 of last year. The company continues to avoid bargaining and reaching a fair deal.
Local 2110 of the UAW represents 250+ employees in editorial, sales, publicity, design, legal, and marketing departments. The union is bargaining for higher pay, a greater commitment to diversifying staff, and stronger union protection. Negotiations started in December 2021 and unionized employees have been working without a contract since April 2022.
“The company implemented a return-to-office policy this week,” said Laura Harshberger, a Senior Production Editor in Children’s Books and the Union Chairperson. “Every day we see our executives cross the picket line, sometimes multiple times a day, pretending like the strike isn’t happening and it’s business as usual inside. But we know our strike poses a strain on the company. Books are moving off their original publication schedule and often are not getting the attention they need. This is heartbreaking considering how invested all HarperCollins employees are in the company’s success and reputation. HarperCollins management is choosing to risk it all by refusing to put a fair offer on the table.”
