A Statement on the Passing of Labor Leader George Gresham

We join the entire New York City Labor Movement in mourning the loss of George Gresham, longtime President of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East and a dedicated member of the NYC Central Labor Council Executive Board.

George rose from the ranks as a hospital worker to lead one of the nation’s most influential local unions, and spent his life fighting for healthcare workers and all working people. He believed deeply that the fight for worker power was inseparable from the fights for racial justice, immigrant justice, and dignity for all. Over decades of leadership, George helped generations of healthcare workers win not only strong contracts, but greater respect and a stronger voice on the job and in their communities.

With gratitude for his lifetime of service, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and the entire 1199SEIU family.
