Unions Rally for 19th Annual Equal Pay Day

On Tuesday, CWA Local 1180 President Gloria Middleton and SAG-AFTRA Chief Labor Policy Officer and New York Local Executive Director Rebecca Damon led the 19th Annual Rally recognizing Equal Pay Day, the symbolic date in 2025 a woman needs to work until to catch up to what a man made in 2024. The rally, which took place at City Hall, also featured speeches from CWA Local 1181 President Rebecca Greene, NYC Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, NYC Council Majority Leader Amanda Farias, NYC Council Majority Whip Selvena Brooks-Powers, former NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer, and Seher Khawaja, Director of Economic Justice at Legal Momentum.
The event is held annually to call attention to the continued pay disparities in our city and across the country, and to call for the administration to amend and close loopholes in current laws that allow businesses to pay women less than their male counterparts. In New York, working women earn just 87 cents on the dollar compared to a man in the exact same position. The disparities are even wider for women of color, with Black women earning 66 cents, Latina women earning 60 cents, and Native American women earning 55 cents.
