Trump Administration Again Targets Offshore Wind Projects, Threatening Thousands of Good Jobs

The Trump Administration this week announced a halt to construction on all U.S. offshore wind projects, including New York's Empire Wind and Sunrise Wind, which are planned to generate a combined 1,734 megawatts, enough to power one million homes when completed in 2027. The Administration previously issued a stop-work order to Empire Wind in April of this year, but construction was eventually able to resume.
Offshore wind projects are critical to meeting growing energy demand and stabilizing energy costs. Halting work after permits are issued and construction has begun imperils good jobs, increases costs, and delays infrastructure New York depends on.
“Once again, the Trump administration is halting offshore wind projects that were already approved and underway, pulling the rug out from under workers for the second time this year,” said NYC CLC President Brendan Griffith.“This reckless and short-sighted decision puts thousands of union jobs at risk, threatens billions in investment, and undermines New York’s progress toward cleaner, more affordable energy. The NYC Labor Movement stands with workers and opposes this attempt to stall projects our communities depend on.” Read more in the New York Times and in Governor Kathy Hochul's Op-Ed responding to the order.
