NYU Contract Faculty Set Unfair Labor Practice Strike Deadline

Contract Faculty United–UAW members at New York University have set an unfair labor practice strike deadline as negotiations with the university administration continue to stall. After more than a year of bargaining and repeated labor law violations by NYU, including refusal to negotiate over key benefits such as housing, unilateral changes to terms and conditions of employment, and attempts to prevent non-union coworkers from honoring picket lines, a supermajority of contract faculty voted to authorize a strike, with 90% of voters supporting the action.
Contract faculty are fighting for stronger job security, reasonable workloads, academic freedom protections, fair compensation that reflects their contributions and years of service, and full participation in academic governance. If the administration isn’t willing to bargain in good faith and settle a fair contract by Monday, March 23, members—who make up half of NYU’s full-time faculty—are ready to withhold their labor.
