Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) Commissioner Sam Levine joined Mayor Zohran Mamdani to kick off the 2026 tax season through DCWP’s NYC Free Tax Prep program. If you live or work in New York City and earned $97,000 with qualifying dependents or $68,000 without qualifying dependents in 2025, you can file for free with an IRS-certified volunteer preparer in-person or online.

With more than 140 NYC Free Tax Prep sites in all five boroughs, work with a knowledgeable preparer to get your full refund and all credits you may be eligible for, like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the recently enhanced Empire State Child Tax Credit. NYC Free Tax Prep also offers year-round resources, including consultations and educational workshops, that are tailored to the needs of self-employed New Yorkers, such as rideshare drivers, delivery workers, gig workers, freelancers, and independent contractors.
