NYC CLC/UFT Women’s History Month Brunch Draws Full House

The NYC Central Labor Council and UFT on Monday hosted a Women’s History Month Brunch at UFT headquarters, bringing together a full house of approximately 100 attendees from a wide swath of industries and sectors across the Labor Movement. Centered on the theme, Leading the Change: Women Shaping the Labor Movement through Leadership, Mentorship, and Building Sustainably for the Long Haul, the program was opened by NYC CLC Secretary-Treasurer and UFT Vice President Janella Hinds, who welcomed attendees, recognized the leadership of women across the movement, and introduced a special video message from AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler.
The program featured a keynote address from New York City Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su, who drew on her experience as Acting U.S. Secretary of Labor and her broader career fighting for workers, and also highlighted women here in New York City who have made an incredible impact on their unions and the broader Labor Movement. Following the keynote, Janella Hinds moderated a panel discussion with Rebecca Damon of SAG-AFTRA, Nancy Hagans of the New York State Nurses Association, Patricia White of IATSE Local 764, and Gloria Middleton of CWA Local 1180. Panelists spoke directly to the program’s theme, sharing insights on navigating leadership spaces, sustaining long-term engagement in the work, building strong mentorship and succession pathways, and how women are shaping and strengthening labor institutions for the future.
