This week, several midtown Manhattan buildings had to be evacuated after structural columns buckled inside a high-rise building on East 42nd Street undergoing a residential conversion. Thankfully, no workers or members of the public were injured, and city officials and construction crews have been working to stabilize the building and ensure the surrounding area remains safe.

While the cause of the structural failure has not yet been determined, the Labor Movement continues to advocate for the highest safety standards on every construction site, including the use of a highly trained, union workforce. Decades of research have shown that robust training, strong safety practices, and worker protections save lives, which is why union construction remains the gold standard for safety.
