On Monday, unionized nonprofit workers of the International Rescue Committee (IRC Workers Unite – OPEIU), including members of OPEIU Local 153, rallied outside the organization’s U.S. headquarters in New York City as part of a three-day marathon bargaining session. Since 2023, thirteen IRC program offices across the country have unionized with the Office and Professional Employees International Union, forming IRC Workers Unite. These workers, who dedicate themselves to serving people seeking refuge and a better life, organized because they believe in IRC’s mission and want to carry it out with the stability, security, and dignity they provide to their clients every day. They were joined at the rally by allies and supporters from across the Labor Movement who stood in solidarity with their call for a fair contract.

While IRC’s top executives collectively earn nearly $5 million, many frontline staff struggle to make ends meet and even take second jobs. At a time when funding for refugee services faces major federal threats, IRC workers emphasized the urgent need for meaningful layoff protections, fair wages, and workplace improvements. They called on the community to stand with them in their fight for a first contract that reflects the values of the organization. Support their effort by signing their petition here!
