On Earth Day, New Yorkers Rally to Support Offshore Wind and Clean Energy Jobs

On Tuesday, Earth Day, community members, union workers, and environmental advocates gathered outside the Nassau County Executive and Legislative Building to rally in support of offshore wind development following the Trump Administration’s dangerous stop work order on the Empire Wind 1 project.
Empire Wind 1, a major offshore wind farm under development off the coast of Long Beach, was expected to power 500,000 homes. The project had already begun construction and was delivering millions in investment to local communities—including at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, a key hub for offshore wind staging—while creating thousands of good-paying, union jobs. The stop work order is a dangerous setback for New York’s path toward energy independence and abundance, economic growth, and a healthier climate.
On Earth Day, activists, workers, and community members sent a clear message: New Yorkers from NYC to Long Island are standing up for clean energy, green jobs, and a just transition away from polluting fossil fuels.
Climate Jobs New YorkExecutive Director Esther Rosario said, “We don’t solve an energy crisis by hitting the brakes. We solve it by putting union members to work building our energy future. This is about people not politics, and we have people counting on paychecks from this project to support their families. This Earth Day, we urge our federal government to reverse the stop work order on Empire Wind 1. We must protect the union jobs that are rebuilding our middle class and building our future. We’re ready to go back to work.” See more photos and videos here.
