On December 1, New York City announced a landmark $38.9 million Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) settlement with Starbucks for widespread violation of the City’s Fair Workweek Law. A multi-year investigation by DCWP found that Starbucks committed more than half a million violations of the law since 2021.

Starbucks is required to pay more than $35.5 million in restitution (along with $3.4 million in civil penalties and costs) to over 15,000 workers harmed by Starbucks’ unlawful practices, as well as any additional workers who come forward. The settlement also carves out claims related to laid-off employees affected by Starbucks’ recent closures of NYC stores, who have a right to reinstatement at open locations under the law.

DCWP is proud to stand up for workers facing unfair business practices. If you’re a Starbucks worker seeking to claim restitution or are a laid-off worker requesting reinstatement, file a complaint with DCWP.
