Amazon Teamsters Rally with IBT President O’Brien, Mayor Mamdani, and Labor and Community Allies at City Hall for Delivery Protection Act

Hundreds of rank-and-file Amazon Teamsters rallied at City Hall on Thursday alongside Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien, New York City elected officials including Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and labor and community allies, urging Council Speaker Julie Menin to schedule an immediate vote on the Delivery Protection Act. NYC CLC President Brendan Griffith also spoke at the rally in support of the legislation.
The Delivery Protection Act, authored by Councilmember Tiffany Cabán, would require delivery companies like Amazon to register their facilities with the city and ban subcontracting for last-mile delivery drivers in the five boroughs. Amazon uses a corrupt subcontracting model in which third-party “Delivery Service Partners” shield the company from legal liability while making billions in profit. The bill is supported by a majority of the City Council and Mayor Mamdani.
“Amazon is America’s most corrupt white-collar crime syndicate, wasting millions to rob warehouse workers of the right to collectively bargain while designing a nationwide subcontracting scheme to deny employment rights to its entire fleet of delivery drivers,” O’Brien said. “New York City is a vital artery of Amazon’s global logistics operations, and it must be the first city to pass the Delivery Protection Act. Amazon’s unchecked exploitation of drivers and parcel delivery workers has got to end.”
“The workers who deliver packages to our doors in every kind of weather deserve what every worker deserves: a fair paycheck, dignity on the job and a boss who is held accountable for how they treat their employees,” said Mayor Mamdani. “Amazon has built a system that lets bosses avoid that responsibility. Drivers are standing up and demanding change. I’m proud to stand with them, the Teamsters and Councilmember Cabán in the fight for the dignity and protections every worker deserves.”
Amazon has spent over $8 million to bankroll a dark money campaign against the Delivery Protection Act, its largest lobbying effort in New York City and state history. Amazon workers in New York City have responded with grassroots efforts, including canvassing, leafletting, and phone banking New Yorkers to support the bill.
