Since Hurricane Sandy hit the city’s shores, community, worker, faith-based, and volunteer organizations across New York City have been hard at work helping New Yorkers recover and rebuild. Organizations have provided relief, helped Sandy victims access services and apply for programs, trained and deployed reconstruction workers and volunteers, among many other vital tasks. A year has passed and millions of recovery and rebuilding dollars have been given to the city but our communities continue to feel the devastation, hunger, homelessness, and displacement.

Now is the time for a deeper analysis of the storm’s impacts on vulnerable communities, the ongoing unmet needs on the ground, the city’s recovery efforts and rebuilding plans to-date, as well as an analysis of who controls federal recovery money, key decision-makers, and of the connection between economic struggles and climate change.

This training will bring workers, congregation members, volunteers and all who were impacted by Sandy to explore how organizing around the recovery can help further justice and equity across the city.
